5-16 Inch Star Description
The 5/16th service stars are a specific Marine Corps or Navy device designed to show how many times a particular award has been earned. These stars come in two colors, silver and gold. Gold stars represent one subsequent awarding, but once there are four gold stars (symbolizing five awards), they are replaced with one silver star. One silver star represents five gold stars. For example, A service member who has won seven medals will display the ribbon plus one silver star and one gold star.This device is in a 5/16" size.It comes in Gold and Silver.

A gold star would be issued for each of the second through fifth awards, to be replaced by a silver star which would indicate a sixth award. To date no one has received more than five awards.
