Air Force Promotion to O-10 General
A General is a General Officer in the United States Air Force at DoD paygrade O-10. This page describes how the Air Force determines who is eligible for the promotion list to General.
All generals are lieutenant generals who were promoted. Due to the nature of the process, promotion to general officer is also a political process.
Promotion to a general officer rank is quite different from regular promotions. A board will screen eligible lieutenant generals and will then produce a list of officers recommended for promotion to general. With the advise of the secretaries of Defense and Air Force, the President will nominate a certain number of officers from the list for the Senate to confirm. Upon being confirmed by a majority in the Senate, a lieutenant general may be promoted to general. A new lieutenant general must be in an assignment billeted for the rank in order to receive the promotion.
