How to get promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 3 Army Promotion to W-3 Chief Warrant Officer 3

A Chief Warrant Officer 3 is a Warrant Officer in the United States Army at DoD paygrade W-3. This page describes how the Army determines who is eligible for the promotion list to Chief Warrant Officer 3.

As with CW2’s, CW3’s are appointed upon the recommendation of the Secretary of the Army to the Commander-in-Chief.

A CW2 who has continued to display the high level of technical and tactical competence that earned them that rank as well as display strong leadership and discharge their duties and responsibilities well is often recommended by superiors for service as a Chief Warrant Officer at a higher rank and level of responsibility.

In such cases, a recommendation for promotion is submitted to the Secretary of the Army, who in turn submits it to the President if he finds the candidate worthy.

The Commander-in-Chief then decides whether or not to promote the candidate, issuing a new commission of Chief Warrant Officer 3 if he approves the recommendation.
