How to get promoted to Lieutenant Coast Guard Promotion to O-3 Lieutenant

A Lieutenant is a Junior Officer in the United States Coast Guard at DoD paygrade O-3. This page describes how the Coast Guard determines who is eligible for the promotion list to Lieutenant.

A LTJG must have served a minimum of two years' Time in Grade to become eligible for promotion to Lieutenant. The service secretary identifies the number of vacancies and convenes a selection board for screening candidates. There are four main criteria that the Coast Guard selection board will look for in its top candidates for advancement: proof of high performance, professionalism, leadership and education. To be eligible, the candidate should be completing additional courses towards qualifying as an expert in his or her specialty, and ensuring that he or she performs exceptionally well on any tour of duty assigned to him or her.
