What is the Air Force Training Ribbon Decoration?
The Air Force Training Ribbon is the lowest military award of the United States Air Force. The ribbon only ranks above foreign military awards. The Air Force Training Ribbon was authorized by the U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff on October 12th, 1980. It is awarded to U.S. Air Force service members on completion of initial basic training after August 14th, 1974. Initial basic training in the U.S. Air Force is defined as Basic Military Training (BMT) for enlisted personnel, Basic Cadet Training (BCT) at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), or commissioning through Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) and Officer Training School (OTS). In December 1986, the criteria expanded and authorized the ribbon to anyone who was on active duty, regardless of when they completed initial basic training. If a member completes two accession training programs, such as BMT and OTS, a bronze oak leaf cluster is worn on the ribbon. The ribbon itself was designed by the Institute of Heraldry.
The United States military sorts decorations into categories called Classes and Types. The Air Force Training Ribbon medal is classified as a Training Award of the type Professional Development Ribbon.
